You don’t need to break the bank buying maternity clothes! If this is your first pregnancy, you can get away with just buying basic maternity pieces and add your clothes from your existing wardrobe up until you reach the middle of your third trimester.
Basics
If this is your second pregnancy you will probably get away with doing that until you reach the third trimester because your bump will be bumping sooner than before so it’s best to get these basic maternity items sooner rather than later.
Long sleeve basic shirt

A long sleeve shirt as a base layer for some outfits will be ideal during fall and winter.
This long sleeve shirt comes in so many colors and it’s long enough to cover the belly even when you get in the third trimester.
The pleats on the sides allow the shirt to hug your belly and define it.

Summer basics
I love that you can wear these shirts and tank tops with just about anything! You can pair them with overalls, shorts, leggings, short skirts, Maxi skirts, you name it.
I like to add a denim long sleeve shirt to the tank tops, it adds an extra layer when it gets a little colder in the mornings.
Maternity Leggins
You have to get at least one pair of maternity leggings for when your belly grows in the at the end of the 2nd and 3rd trimester.
It’s very helpful to have leggings with side pockets or you can just have the plain black leggings, either way these leggings cover the entire belly and you get to style them in so many ways!

Maternity Shapewear
The key to wearing both tight and flowy dresses is to wear a maternity shapewear underneath so make sure you get one.
The shapewear will hug your belly and add and extra layer of protection in case a breeze decides to lift that flowy dress a little too high.
I like to wear the mid thigh high shapewear so I can even wear it with short skirts.
No wire bras!
Being pregnant means everything gets bigger and the ladies are the first ones to show up plumper every trimester.
My breast size went up 2 sizes in a very short time and I was scrambling to find comfortable bras with support that made my shirts and dresses look good too but I was able to find these bad boys.
If you’re planning on breastfeeding these nursing bralettes come in handy too!
Lounge wear
The first trimester is pretty debilitating, your body is getting used to these surge of hormones and it so taxing on your body that majority of the time you feel exhausted and all you want to do is lay plop your body somewhere to rest.
I remember changing into some comfy lounge wear as soon as I’d come home from work and just lay down and take a nap. I was napping any chance I got and nothing seemed to fit from the waist down so I pretty much lived in lounge wear and leggings unless I had plans to go out.
These were my to go lounge wear outfits most if not all throughout my pregnancy and postpartum to this day!
Floral Print
The adorable two-piece set with daisies is thick but not too heavy and it’s so soft! Make sure to hang it dry to keep it feeling soft.
I’m 5’4 and when I was in my first trimester I was 130 lbs and the size small gave me a nice comfortable fit that hugged me in all the right spots but I ended up getting this same set in the yellow color in size Medium so I could wear it a little looser later on in my pregnancy.
Leopard Print
This Leopard print two-piece set was by far my favorite set when it was cold enough to wear a sweater but not cold enough to wear pants. The fuzzy fleece material feels so soft to the touch I was in love!
I used to match this sweater with maternity leggings in the winter months when my belly grew bigger.
I got this set in size small and since it was so stretchy I was able to wear it all throughout my pregnancy and was amazing to have postpartum as well.

Wide Leg Sweater Set
Love this wide leg + sweater lounge set comes in so many colors and the fabric is thick and stretchy which makes it very comfortable in every stage of pregnancy.
I wore the pants all through out my pregnancy and even packed it in my hospital bag to wear as my coming home outfit.
I got this set in size small. The top is loose and the pants hug your bottom in the right places.

The Two-piece Jogger Set
This two-piece lounge wear set is not only incredibly soft and lightweight but it also comes in many different colors and you can even get the top with short sleeves.
Love that the jogger pants have pockets and are cuffed at the ankle. However, by the third trimester I had to get these maternity joggers to fit the growing belly.
The Nursing set
OK, so this is more of a pijama set but I used this nursing long sleeve set as lounge wear when I was pregnant and it came in handy when I was breastfeeding postpartum.
It was the perfect lounge set for breastfeeding since it has easy access without having to extra exposed areas.
The material is very comfortable, breathable, and soft.
Dresses
Flowy dresses are a staple pregnancy outfit because is one piece and there will always be room for your belly.
The Flowy Maxi Dress
The maxi dress looks good in every trimester and it’s extremely comfortable. It’s also perfect to wear when you go to your OBGYN appointments.

You don’t actually have to spend money in the maternity department with this type of dress because the skirt allows room for your belly to grow so if you don’t already have one in your closet, buy one in the same size or one size up (boobs get bigger and sometimes won’t fit in your pre-pregnancy size) you use to wear pre-pregnancy.

However, I would avoid wearing a flowy dress in the last weeks of the third trimester if it doesn’t have a slit on one side or if the skirt is too thick because it tends to create a tent-like-look under the belly making you look a little bit bigger than what you actually are.
The skirt on the dress I’m wearing at 36 weeks in these pictures is not very thick so it doesn’t make that tent effect as other dresses do and movement helps that tent effect go away

Short Flowy dress

Short flowy dresses look adorable when you have a small bump so they work in your first and 2nd trimester but they are a little harder to style once you have a big belly in the third trimester mainly because of the “tent” effect they create with you belly which makes you look bigger than you actually are.
However, you can rock the flowy dresses if they’re are made out of lightweight material that is loose but hugs your body.
Here are some of my favorite short flowy dresses that worked for me while I was pregnant both times.

The Maxi bodycon dress
The bodycon dress will be your best friend when you reach the third trimester. I hated wearing jeans and the only things my legs tolerated were legging, skirts, dresses, and rompers with very loose shorts.
The key to getting bodycon dresses is to get the stretchy kind so you can use it all throughout your pregnancy and postpartum as well.
TIP: You can also use the bodycon dresses as a skirt! just add a stretchy belt above your belly and fold the bottom of the shirt or sweater under the belt and now you don’t have to get multiple stretchy skirts!
Here are some of my favorite bodycon dresses! I ordered mine in my pre-pregnancy size and they were still fitting me at 37 weeks pregnant during my second pregnancy which means that if this is your first pregnancy, you’ll be able to wear these dresses until you give birth.

The Short Bodycon Dress
I lived in bodycon dresses because they were so comfortable and I was running hot all the time so I definitely needed some air flow to cool me down everywhere.
Some of the dresses I already had in my closet were a little above the knee but they were stretchy so I was able to get away with wearing these stretchy bodycon dresses until my belly got so big that the dress became too short for me to wear.
The one dress that I kept wearing even in the third trimester was this rouched bodycon long sleeve dress that had strings on the side which allowed me to adjust the dress to the right length.
When you’re looking for stretchy dresses you want to make sure they’re made out of rayon and spandex so you can get the most out of them during pregnancy and they can bounce back for you to wear postpartum as well.
I was able to wear this long sleeve bodycon mini dress I had from forever21 up until the day I got induced at 41 weeks during my first pregnancy. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find this specific dress anywhere online but this black and white striped maternity dress comes close to the look.
Majority of the mini bodycon dresses I had in my closet I was able to wear them for the first and maybe during the first half of my second trimester because once my belly started to grow, the dress got shorter and I didn’t want to expose private bits in public.
I spent my third trimester in spring so it was hot where live and I knew I wanted to have more kids down the road so I decided to buy some maternity mini bodycon dresses during my first pregnancy.
I made sure to get the dresses that had rouching on the sides so the dress would hug my belly in the right places.
This maternity floral print dress was perfect for spring. I wore it to an Easter event and was comfortable the entire time.
I like to layer my outfits since I get cold really easily so I did pair it with a jean blouse that I wasn’t able to botton up but I managed to tie the ends in the front.
If you don’t want to spend money in maternity clothes, always opt for the stretchy fabric in dresses.
Simple one tone dresses like this white bodycon tank dress or this Army green bodycon dress can easily be dressed up or down with accessories and multiple layers of clothing.
I had these two dresses in my closet prior to getting pregnant and they worked great all the way to my third trimester.
Just keep in mind that the shorter the mini dress is, the harder it is to do anything with a toddler.
During my second pregnancy I used this Army green bodycon dress multiple times in my third trimester even though it was a little short but I always wore it to events where I wasn’t going to be running around and bending over to pick up my toddler.
I would pair it with sweaters or long cardigans and knee high boots.
Add a sweater or cardigans to any dress when you want a skirt look

Stretchy skirts
Stretchy skirts will be your best friend once the belly becomes bigger in the second and third trimester.
Long Stretchy skirts
I pretty much wore this black mid-length skirt with a slit on one side majority of the time because it was easy to pair it with any shirt or sweater I already had in my closet.
The stretchy material helped me being comfortable while my belly was growing and it was easy to dress up or down depending on what I was going to do that day.
I had more mid-size dresses that were stretchy already in my closet and didn’t have to buy a bunch of skirts. I would just put on a shirt, blouse, or sweater over them and style it to look like I had a skirt.

However, having a skirt did allow me to wear the crop tops I already had in my closet which was convenient.

Short flowy skirts
Rompers
I loved wearing rompers when I was pregnant because I was able to dress them up with a blazer of just look casual with a cardigan or a denim shirt plus I was running hot all the time making a bunch of tiny organs inside my body so rompers kept me nice and cool.
This was my to go romper since I started showing up to the third trimester. It is so stretchy and flowy! I would wear this with an denim shirt, a cardigan, or just by itself depending on the weather.
I knew that it would be hard and uncomfortable to wear the rompers I already had in my closet past the middle of the second trimester so I did get maternity rompers during my first pregnancy.
I did get these maternity rompers almost 3 years ago on amazon and unfortunately the links to the rompers are not available but keep checking!
Rompers are perfect for running around after a toddler without worrying about showing too much once the belly gets big, just make sure you get them in the maternity section.

Jumpsuit
I’m a fan of overalls but overalls were uncomfortable for me when I was pregnant and my belly was starting to grow.
This little jumpsuit was the perfect replacement for whenever I wanted to wear overalls.
It’s not only loose in the belly area but it feels so comfortable! I wore this with a short sleeve tee when it was hot and with a long sleeve shirt + a vest when it got a bit chilly.
Overalls/ Short jumpsuit
I was able to get this cute little short overalls on amazon over 3 years ago on the maternity section.
Unfortunately I was not able to find the same one but this adjustable loose overall is similar in shape but has lighter and thinner material that comes in many colors and prints.

Congratulations on your upcoming baby!
wishing you and your family a healthy & happy pregnancy!
