There are so many developmental benefits to reading to your child and starting as early as possible will make your baby develop a love for reading. Books are a great way to interact together too but sometimes it is hard for your little one to keep his attention on a book which can make reading time more of a nightmare. Interactive books make reading time more enjoyable for both you and your baby and keeps the little one engaged more! Here are some of the best interactive books for babies 0-6 months old!
Newborns
Newborns can get overstimulated very quickly, they are brand new to this world and they’ll mainly be listening to you read since their eye sight is very weak and are still adjusting to the light. They enjoy your voice and company so just grab any book and start reading to them. You can start introducing some black and white high contrast books but I found it more of a bonding experience when I was reading a story to Leo while he was just staring at me studying my face the best he could and listening how I interacted with the book.
2-6 months old
Your baby’s eye sight is getting better every day but he can’t focus on objects that are far away yet so make sure to bring those books close to your baby so they can get a good look.
Make sure to get soft cloth books they can put in their mouth and also hard thick books so it’s harder to destroy and easier for them to turn the page when they get older.
High Contrast Books
High contrast books are great interactive books for infants because their eye sight is not very sharp. At about one month they can detect red and by 4 months they can see colors and can start to see the differences in shades of colors so make sure to get him black and white high contrast books, graduate to black, white, and red high contrast books and then books that contain primary colors.

Interactive Cloth Books
One way babies interact with things is by putting everything and anything in their mouth once they are able to do it. Leo would stare at the pictures in the books and immediately put them in his mouth. He loved the little tabs and anything that would stick out of the book so having a cloth book with different things to interact was a must for Leo.
Cloth books are also so light weight that I have one attached to a teething toy at all times and it’s a life saver when I have to go shopping with my little man because it gets him entertained for a long time

Sound Books
Hearing is one of the most developed senses your baby is born with so sound books are a great way to interact with your baby.
I love sound books because they can be used in many different ways as you baby grows. Leo hated tummy time on the ground so I had to get creative to keep him on his tummy longer than a few seconds before he started crying. At this age they’re curious about things that make sound so sound books worked the best to keep Leo on his tummy. As he grew up he became more amazed

Finger Puppet Books
Once babies start moving around more, they just want to keep moving around and it’s harder to keep them still long enough to sit though a book but these types of interactive books make story time magical for them. I used to make up my own stories sometimes and Leo was nothing but smiles, he absolutely loves them and I get tons of big laughs when I read him books with finger puppets.

Tactile Books
Another favorite type of interactive books are the touch and feel textured books. You get to describe ‘soft, bumpy, woolly, rough, fluffy, smooth, shiny’ and expose your baby to different textures!
Books we love:
Pop-up Books
Pop-up books are brightly colored and just fun! They have the great element of surprise which brings tons of giggles and laughter here and there.
Books we love:
Lift-the-Flap Books
Lift-the flap interactive books are great for your baby to start making predictions. Since babies don’t have full dexterity yet so you have to control the reveal when it comes to these books, make sure to ask a question before the reveal.

Waterproof Books
Reading time can happen any time and since we’re trying our best to keep talking so our babies can build good language skills why not incorporate reading during bath time?
Grab a waterproof book and start interacting with your little one in the bath. During your baby’s early months you can show them the pictures and have them track the pictures. As your baby grows older, they’ll want to use the book as a toy but you can still describe the color or object.
